NUTRITION IN OUR SCHOOLS

KIPP Memphis Public Schools participates in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), in which meals are provided to students at no cost. Under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), CEP is a non-pricing meal service option for schools and school districts in low-income areas. CEP allows the nation’s highest poverty schools and districts to serve breakfast and lunch at no cost to all enrolled students without collecting household applications.

School Breakfast Program

The School Breakfast Program (SBP) is a federally assisted meal program operating in public and non-profit private schools. The SBP started in 1966 as a pilot project and was made a permanent entitlement program by Congress in 1975. On average, students who participate in the School Breakfast Program eat a breakfast of higher nutritional quality than students who eat breakfast elsewhere. KIPP Memphis also offers Grab ‘N’ Go breakfast as an option to traditional cafeteria-based breakfast.

National School Lunch Program

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day. ALL Kippsters are eligible to eat lunch at no cost. The program was established under the National School Lunch Act, signed by President Harry Truman in 1946. All NSLP lunches must meet Federal requirements.

Ensuring Children have Access to Nutritious Meals and Snacks When School is not in Session

USDA works closely with states to ensure that children who receive free or reduced-price school meals can get the nutrition they need when schools are closed – whether during summer break or unexpected closures during the school year. Through USDA’s summer meal programs, approved sites in communities across the country can serve meals to kids up to age 18 at no cost. Families can use this tool to find directions to nearby meal sites, as well as their hours of operation and contact information.

Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) will operate the Summer Food Service Program for summer feeding in various locations throughout Shelby County. Click on the link below for the Tennessee Department of Human Services SFSP website to view USDA summer meals site finder. MSCS summer feeding sites are included.

KIPP Memphis Wellness Policy

All Local Education Agencies (LEA) that participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP) are required to establish a local school wellness policy. According to the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA), a local school wellness policy, at a minimum, must include goals for nutrition promotion and education, physical activity, and other school-based activities that promote student wellness.

Parents, students, representatives of KIPP Memphis Public Schools (KMPS), teachers of physical education, school health professionals, the school board, school administrators, and the general public are welcome to participate in the review and update of KMPS Wellness policy.

The USDA prohibits discrimination in all its programs and activities. Read the Civil Rights Statement below Regarding Nutrition Services in our schools.
