NASA Astronaut Dr. Jeanette Epps visits KIPP Memphis to Inspire Students on National Space Day

How cool is this?! In a powerful celebration of National Space Day, KIPP Memphis Public Schools teamed up with How Cool Is This?! Productions to host NASA astronaut Dr. Jeanette Epps across all KIPP Memphis campuses — sparking imagination, ambition, and real-world connections to STEM education.

The day included a high-energy “Out of This World” pep rally for elementary and middle school students, followed by a more intimate Q&A panel with high school scholars. From enthusiastic conversations to thoughtful student-led questions, the excitement was sky-high as Dr. Epps shared her journey, fielded questions about life in space, and challenged students to dream bigger.

Dr. Epps’ visit was not just exciting — it was deeply meaningful. As a trailblazing Black woman in the field of aerospace, she serves as a living example of what is possible when access, education, and representation come together. A former CIA intelligence officer and aerospace engineer, Dr. Epps was selected by NASA in 2009 and made history as the first African American woman assigned to a long-duration mission aboard the International Space Station.

Her presence on KIPP Memphis campuses gave students — particularly girls and students of color — the rare and powerful opportunity to engage with someone who reflects their potential. She made space exploration feel tangible and reminded scholars that their future in STEM isn’t just possible — it’s expected.

"At KIPP Memphis, we are proud to continue offering robust STEM courses that empower our scholars to explore, innovate, and lead," said Dr. Antonio Burt, Chief Executive Officer of KIPP Memphis Public Schools. "Providing students with firsthand experiences with leaders like Dr. Epps ensures they see themselves reflected in limitless futures and understand the vital impact of STEM on their lives and communities.”

The event was made possible through a partnership with How Cool Is This?! Productions, a national initiative focused on creating awe-inspiring educational moments that connect young people with innovators, changemakers, and real-world role models. For KIPP Memphis students, this visit was more than a celebration — it was a spark. A reminder that with the right tools, support, and inspiration, they can reach far beyond the stars.
